From Rugby Pitch to New Purpose: How Hariss International Turned Africa Cup Plastic Waste Into Everyday Essentials

At the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, held at Nambole Stadium, Hariss International turned thousands of discarded plastic bottles into coaching boards, laptop stands, phone stands and flower pots, proving that sustainability can create lasting impact long after the final whistle.

The story begins on the sidelines of the tournament, where fans cheered, players competed, and plastic bottles piled up by the hundreds across Nambole Stadium. Rather than letting that waste end its journey in a landfill, Hariss International chose a different play: every bottle collected at the stadium became the starting point of something new.

The bottles were transported to Taka Taka Plastics, where the real transformation began. Here, waste becomes raw material. Bottles are sorted, washed, shredded and processed, step by careful step, until what was once packaging is reshaped into something entirely different. Workers rinse shredded plastic fragments clean, preparing them for their next life.

That next life took shape in a range of everyday, useful items: sturdy coaching boards for training sessions, practical laptop and phone stands, and colourful flower pots, each one carrying a simple, powerful message: "One Small Act, Big Impact. Recycle Today," along with a note that it was made from recycled plastic collected at the Rugby Africa Cup 2025.

As the campaign puts it, this isn't the end of the journey, it's just the beginning. Because sustainability isn't only about reducing waste; it's about creating long-term impact that reaches beyond the stadium and into everyday life.

In the final act of this journey, the coaching boards were handed over to the Uganda Rugby Union, to support training sessions across the country, while the laptop stands, phone stands and flower pots found new homes and new purpose elsewhere. What started as bottles scattered around Nambole Stadium became tools and everyday items built to last, a small act with a big, lasting impact.
